(Amarmani Tripathi is a politician and erstwhile cabinet Minister in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Tripathi has been associated with several parties, most recently the Samajwadi Party under Mulayam Singh Yadav inUttar PradeshIndia. He was arrested in September 2003 in connection with the murder of poetess Madhumita Shukla, with whom he allegedly had an affair, and who was brutally murdered on May 9, 2003. After investigations revealed that she was carrying a foetus that matched the DNA of Amarmani[1], the Supreme Court of India rejected his bail plea, and he is currently in jail.
Tripathi is one among many criminal-politicians in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Criminal career

Tripathi was a member of the gang of Hari Shankar Tiwari, a criminal politician from the Loktantrik Congress. Before entering politics, Tripathi was listed as a "Category A history-sheeter" (having a long record of offences) with 33 criminal cases pending against him, including five relating to murder[2].
After joining politics, Tripathi was instrumental in several large shifts of allegiance involving dozens of MPs, thus influencing the formation of several governments in Uttar Pradesh. He has been a member of theIndian National CongressBahujan Samaj Party, and the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was Minister of State for Institutional Finance in the Rajnath Singh-led BJP government in 2001, but was dismissed in December that year, after the kidnappers of Rahul Madesia, the 15-year-old son of a businessman in Basti in eastern Uttar Pradesh, told the police that Tripathi had provided them the bungalow in Lucknow from where they were arrested. His fiend Chandravijay singh from Moradabad was also involved with him

Madhumita Shukla murder

On May 9, 2003, Madhumita Shukla, a budding poetess and allegedly the lover of Amarmani, was gunned down from close range in her two-room apartment in Lucknow's Paper Mill Colony. Phone calls relating to the murder were traced to his wife Madhumani in Gorakhpur[1], who has also been implicated in the murder. This case was being taken care by the CB - CID which was being headed by the then Director Genegral named Mr.Mahendra Lalka IPS from 1967 batch. The Chief Miniter - Mayawati did suspend him but Mr. Mahendra Lalka was reinstated within 45 days of his suspension as the decision by the Chief Minister was not right and she realized her mistake and Mr. Mahendra Lalka was reinstated. Mr. Mahendra Lalka has a great reputaion among the IPS, IAS lobby, he is known for his upright and straight forwardness.
Amarmani was arrested on September 21, 2003. Various attempts at getting bail have been turned down, especially based on the DNA evidence of a relationship which he had initially denied.
He was granted bail by the Allahabad High Court, Lucknow Bench, Lucknow vide Order dated April 8, 2004. The CBI challenged this in the Supreme Court. On September 26, 2005, the Supreme Court set aside the Order dated April 8, 2004 of the Allahabad High Court, Lucknow Bench, Lucknow, and cancelled his bail.[3]
Subsequent to his arrest, he, along with his wife Madhumani, are lodged in Gorakhpur jail, where they are said to be leading a carefree life.[4]
In the U.P. Assembly Elections, 2007, Amarmani won as an Independent candidate, despite being in Gorakhpur Jail, where his case might take a long time to come to trial. He won the Lakshmipur Constituency seat in Mahrajganj District, defeating nearest rival Kaushal Kishore of the Rashtriya Janata Dal by a margin of nearly 20 thousand votes (12%)[5]
A special court in Dehradun chaired by His Honour VB Rai convicted former UP minister Amarmani Tripathi, his wife Madhumani Tripathi, his first cousin Rohit Chaturvedi and his associate Santosh Rai in the Madhumita Shukla murder case on October 24, 2007.
The court has sentenced Amarmani, his wife Madhumani and two other accused to life imprisonment. 79 witnesses have appeared in the case, which was transferred to the Court of District and Sessions Judge V B Rai from Lucknow on the orders of the Supreme Court, earlier this year.
The CBI had arrested five people, including Amarmani and Madhumani, in connection with the case.
The trial in the case began in March following apprehensions expressed by Madhumita's family that Amarmani and Madhumani may try to block a free and fair trial in their home state.
Madhumita was found murdered at her Lucknow flat on May 9, 2003. She was allegedly murdered at the behest of Madhumani, who was opposed to Madhumita's affair with her husband.
Later, a post-mortem report revealed that Madhumita was pregnant at the time of her murder. Her sister Nidhi and servant Desraj are the key witnesses in the case.

‘I remember: Even if you die, get it aborted’
The following are excerpts from a five-page letter purportedly written by murdered poet Madhumita Shukla to former Uttar Pradesh minister Amarmani Tripathi. The letter in Hindi was part of a diary Uttar Pradesh police handed over to the CBI, which is investigating the case now.
The letter does not carry any date to show when it was written but it indicated that the two became close after a meeting on November 22, 1999, when Tripathi was a minister.
Isi beech, dhai mahine ka abortion hua. Tab bhee aap suru me kahte rahe ki ‘theek hai, paida karenge’ aur bad me aap Dilli se phone par kahte hai ki ‘chahe jaan chali jai par abortion karwa lo’, hame aaj bhi yaad hai (In the meantime, I had to get the two-and-half-month foetus aborted. Then, too, you used to say ‘it’s fine, the child will be born’ and then later you called from Delhi to say that ‘even if you die get it aborted’, I still remember).”
Ek vaisya ke tarah ham raat bhar apke sath rahe, phir subah hote hi phir bhaga diye jate. Khair phir bhi khusi aapse milne ki rahtee (I would stay with you at night like a prostitute but was thrown out in the morning. Still I felt happy meeting you).”
“…I was convinced that my entire responsibility and problem will be shared by you. Once you got a job for my brother, my entire family started trusting you. I started believing that from now on we would not have to bow to anyone; that we would not have to make compromises any more. You became not only my, but my entire family’s guardian.”
“You had told me in (name of a five-star hotel in Delhi) that I used to roam around, penniless, and that I was a thief and a prostitute. You got my brother a bad job. The day the government fell, he lost it. You did not do anything permanent.”
“Up to five months of the pregnancy, you insisted on having the child but from the sixth month you started pressuring me for an abortion. Did I not dream of having a baby for four months? You may refuse to accept the child but as a mother how can I do that? Should I murder the child after bearing it in my womb for six months? Did you not think of my pain? You treated me as a commodity. Did you not think what would happen to a woman who had already had two major abortions? You would have felt the pain if it was one of your own.”
“Read this letter in full. It is possible that we will never be able to talk at such great length.”
“Bought a house for Rs 1.10 lakh. I was abused by your wife for it. She came to my house, abused me and went off.”
“You could not resist yourself and got associated with another woman, “Pandey”. I saw with my own eyes (you) kissing Manju, but I thought I was to be blamed for it because I was maintaining a distance.
“That is why I’m once again after you, leaving behind the construction at my house. Slowly, you returned to the track. My influence on you was evaporating, the telephone connection was snapped, took away the servant, stopped giving vehicle and going out, but all this without any provocation. I think this happened because I’m no longer fresh for you, even physical strength has taken a knocking, and you started looking for a new one.”
“Even after so many days, I requested you to get my fridge, cooler and house repaired, and you agreed. You said that ‘money is nothing, I will get it done soon’. I feel that the question is not money, but about our feelings.
“Now you are a big minister. I am devastated. But let me try and see if I can give my brothers a happy life.”
